News Archieve Fourth Quickest Jeg's Super Quick 32 Field at Beech Bend Raceway Park May 26, 2007Bump of 4.616After the first round of qualifying the bump was 4.722 set by Ashley Smith, driving the Victor Krack owned dragster with a dozen faster cars looking to get in. The second round qualifying bumped in C. Carrico, Glenn Yancer, J. Lynch, D. McCuiston, M. Bagley, L. Smalley, James Burris, and Doc Powell. The number 1 qualifier was one of two door cars making the field, yours truely, Reed Hughes in the "Paul's Custom Service Camaro" owned by Paul Mann and Paula Mann as Crew Chief. This was accomplished despite the rules changes eliminating the 2 tenth qualifying break for the heavier door cars. Also BTW, the fast qualifier was a DOOR CAR with a SMALL BLOCK. Only three small blocks qualified with 150 less cubic inches! That's like qualifying with 3 less cylinders tied behind your back. Awesome!
The winner was Phillip Oakley in the Texas Road House Dragster (Paul's favorite Steakhouse) who put down incredible numbers mowing down the list of who's who in Jeg's Super Quick 32 racing. Craig Sullivan made the final an all Ford final.
One of my favorite all time racing duals is watching Lester Atkins and Phillip Oakley bracket race. Both guys are experts and close friends. They pair up a couple of times a year and it is always a treat. The head games, the games at the finishline and congratulations at the end are all in great fun. This time Phillip won again and I think that Phillip has won the last two or three match-ups at the Jeg's races. Lester owes Phillip a few.
The man on a Monroe terror is Lynn Ellison. Lynn is on fire. He as raced deep into both Jeg's races and with a car that can qualify at any race, Lynn is my odds on favorite to win the series. If Lynn decides to chase the series, he is a great bracket racer and can win the deal. The 2006 points champion, James Monroe was absent from this event. The record bump would have been tough for James to make without a little "hamburger helper" like NOS. I think there was a big bucks race in the area keeping Killer away, lucky for James. It was nice to see Ed Dudley easily in the field with his new dragster. Jeremy Hornbeck raced in the elder Powell's dragster. It was nice to see Angel too. I hope the hot summer weather is kind to you. She is looking great in all of her new found motherhood. I know Angel and Jeremy are anxiously wait in their new baby daughter. We all wish them health with the delivery in July. I hope the baby is not late because Jeremy being a professional truck driver is never late with his deliveries. I bet Angel will not want to be late but babies have a schedule all their own. Also on the baby front, Mary Jayne Smalley new baby girl, Raelynn Jayne, has a great set of lungs. I could hear that kid all the way across the pits in Paul's motorhome. Too bad we had to thrash all weekend. My hands were too dirty to go and visit Raelynn in person. She looked really cute from across the way. Another monster match-up was between Craig Sullivan and Lynn Smalley in the second round. I don't have the details but this must have been a toss-up. Jeremy Hornbeck got bounced by Mike Bagley in round one. Dean McIlvain was the Bounty Award winner beating Tim Branon in round one. Dean had a major trash the week after the Norwalk TD race where he messed up a lot of top end hardware in eliminations. The hard luck award goes to Michigan racer Ken Simpson from Grand Rapids. After the first qualifying pass, he has some rocker gear give up causing a lot of unrepairable damage. I broke a tail housing on Paul's car and fortunately the Hoke racing team loaned us a tail housing off of their spare trany. If the trany broke in their Super Gasser during Sunday eliminations, I will die. BTW, Paula has send the tail housing in the mail. Thanks again. Pictures from this race provided by Gary Carter Photography. We thrashed on Paul's car all weekend and I had no down time to get any good shots myself. If you have anything (pictures or stories) send them to me by Email. Gary has his photos from the race on his website. You can get there from my Links Page or directly by Gary's link here.
